Kiwanis Club of Upper Allen-Cumberland Valley
The Upper Allen-Cumberland Valley Kiwanis club received its charter in 1955. It is a club dedicated to service of children locally and around the world. We try to serve our community according to the first principle of Kiwanis, which is "to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than the material aspects of life." And we keep fun in our meetings and our projects.
Our local service projects change with the needs in the community. Currently we support the following local programs: after-school tutoring, and mentoring for Mechanicsburg middle school students, Mechanicsburg High School Key Club, Cub Scout Pack 190, Boy Scout Troup 190, Venture Crew scouting, Caitlin Smiles, Operation Wildcat, Cumberland Co. Agency on Domestic Violence, Technical Student Association (TSA), New Hope Ministries food pantries, Meals on Wheels, S.M.A.R.T.S., and Parent Works.
Programs we support outside the local area currently include the Angel Mission and other programs for Haiti, including the effort to bring clean water, education and health care to the town of Pestel, Haiti. We support SowHope, organized to educate and empower women in third world countries.
We finance our service projects with fundraisers: selling Christmas trees at Ashcombe's in December, holding pancake/sausage breakfasts in May and November, and selling blueberries in June.
The world's needs are not diminishing. Our club is seeking new members so the scope of our service can grow. We welcome new members who desire to give back to their community, especially to children's causes.
